HOPE AND STRUGGLE
Several quotes from the book,
"Scarred by Struggle, Transformed by Hope", by Joan D. Chittister

"I have come to understand from them (struggles) that it is not struggle that
defeats us, it is our failure to struggle that depletes the human spirit."  (3)

"Clearly we are living in an era more in need of a spirituality of struggle
than perhaps any other time in history." (9)

"There are no innocents anymore.  There is no such thing as a
noncombatant.  We are all at risk." (11)

"The spiritual question becomes how to go about dying without giving into
the death of the soul." (13)

"If God is in the depth of the heart, no amount of darkness can extinguish
that presence." (43)

"Struggle is a process of pitfalls and challenges, which, if met, become hope."
(19)

"The essence of struggle is neither endurance nor denial.  The essence of
struggle is the decision to become new rather than simply to become older."
(23)

"Struggle is the gift Of new life in disguise." (89)

"The spirituality of struggle gives birth to the spirituality of hope." (97)

"Faith is far from wishful thinking.  We have proof.  An act of faith is the
beginning of hope.  It casts our own small needs into the arms of a God who
has provided for the needs of the universe.  Surely there is hope for us." (99)
We are an “Apostolic Community”
Upon reflection on the idea of being an “Apostolic Community”, several groups
(the Young Adult Group, the Apostolic Communities Core Team, Bereavement,
and our 3 small groups) were asked to name things that make us an apostolic
community.
Some of their ideas were:
we are followers, we are charged to take the message
with us to others, we try to share leadership, we try to help people see the bigger
picture, we believe in each other, we follow together, Jesus Christ holds us
together, we examine our faith life regularly, we are willing to learn and grow,
we are a diverse group, we see the importance of “building” the church, and
recognize church is more than the “building”, we reach out to others, we give
witness by example, we are voices for God, we are committed…
